Cetinje and Lovćen for history admirers
Historically, Cetinje is the most important town in Montenegro, seat of greatest rulers of Montenegro, and that has left a significant trace on this town. The first state printing house in the world was founded in Cetinje, 1493. A year later, in Obod, Hieromonk Makarije printed “Octoechos of the First Tone”- “Oktoih Prvoglasnik”, the first book in Montenegro- 33 years after the first book had been printed in Gutenberg’s Printing Press.
Cetinje takes good care of its tradition, and it was always like that. This is backed up by the fact that this town, small by its area- was never conquered by Ottoman Empire, even though it was attacked 3 times.
After the museums and old buildings tour, and after we take a stroll through this charming town, our excursion continues on the mountain Lovćen (also a national park). We take a 35 minutes bus ride, and then we continue climbing the long stairs all the way to the top of Lovćen. Here, we will visit mausoleum dedicated to the greatest ruler of Montenegro, Petar Petrović Njegoš.
Only when you see how impressive the mausoleum is, when you understand how hard was to build it so high, in unapproachable conditions, in 20th century, you will understand the importance of this place even before the guide explains it.
One of the most breathtaking views in Montenegro spreads from this place. On one side, you can see Boka Bay, and on the other, Skadar Lake. Ones who often go to Lovćen say that on clear and sunny mornings, you can see the Italian coast. This is where our excursion ends, and we head to Petrovac from there.
