The greatest Orthodox temple and monasteries of Montenegro

Petrovac is only a 2 hour drive away from the greatest monastery of Montenegro – Ostrog Monastery. We will need approximately 1 hour of driving from Ostrog Monastery to Hram Hristovog Vaskrsenja – the temple of Christ’s Resurrection. From there, we will have a 30 minutes ride to Cetinje, i.e. the Cetinje Monastery. With a bit of driving, and a lot of free time, you can visit the greatest Orthodox sanctities of Montenegro.

Ostrog Monastery near Nikšić

Excursion begins in Petrovac, and after a short drive, we are coming to Lower Monastery of Ostrog, where the Church of Presentation is found. Its fresco paintings are some of the oldest ones in these areas, and date since 17th century. Upper and lower Monastery levels are situated in the cliffs of Bjelopavlići area. According to historical data, Ostrog Monastery was built by a Herzegovinian Metropolitan Basil.
Ostrog Monastery is well known by its miracles, i.e. a lot of people come from various parts of the world, to bow to the holy relics of Basil of Ostrog – that are believed to do wonders and cure the ill. For that reason specifically, Ostrog Monastery is the most visited monastery in Montenegro.

Hram Hristovog Vaskrsenja- Temple of Christ’s Resurrection in Podgorica

Excursion to the monasteries of Montenegro takes us to Podgorica, where we will visit the Temple of Christ’s Resurrection. An interesting detail about this temple is that the biggest bell in the Balkans, that weighs 11 tons, is found in the loft of the 26.7m high turret. It took 20 years to build this temple. Almost all parts of the temple are made as mosaics, and that’s why the temple has exquisite artistic value.

Cetinje Monastery

After a 30 minute drive to Cetinje, we come to Cetinje Monastery. The whole monastery is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, whose right hand is being guarded here. Cetinje, as well as Cetinje Monastery are the seat of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro for half of the century already. Cetinje Monastery is foundation of Ivan Crnojević, ruler of Zeta (old Montenegro). Apart from the hand of St. John the Baptist, the holy relics of St. Petar Cetinjski, one of the most important Montenegrin public and spiritual rulers, are guarded here, as well as the particles of the True Cross.
